SOLANO AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLARSHIP TO TEXAS A&M

Evelyn Solano, a Livingston High School senior and Cadet Commander of the LHS Naval National Defense Cadet Corps (NNDCC), met with the Texas A&M Air Force ROTC earlier this month in College Station for selection, following her interview with the ROTC Captain. “They were so impressed with the type of student and cadet that LHS has produced that the Air Force Commander asked for a zoom meeting on Thursday night to formally provide the offer of a full ROTC scholarship,” Sergeant First Class Grady Tinker, LHS NNDCC instructor shared. “I’m so proud of Solano, they were impressed with her level of maturity and her leadership qualities of both her and her team and how she presented herself while faced with intense situational questions. “This program is about much more than a branch of the military service,” Tinker continued. “I shape leaders that will win in life through their successes in planning their future within the military or other avenues. My goal is to challenge students and always work as a team and assist students in being the very best version of themselves. Our motto of NNDCC is ‘find a reason to win.’ Winning is doing everything possible thing to make yourself and your team better than yesterday.” Solano was offered a Type 1 scholarship that pays 100% of the college tuition and authorized fees. Type 1 selectees also receive a monthly living expense stipend and an annual book stipend. The commander awards this leadership scholarship to one student nationwide each year. “I was able to meet with the Commander, and she told me that she was awarding me the Type 1 scholarship, called the ‘Commander’s Award,’ which is only awarded once per year to one nominee, and she chose me,” Solano said of the honor. “I am so excited and appreciate everything that I’ve learned in SFC Tinker’s class. In four years of attending LHS, he has taught me amazing leadership skills and lessons, and I wouldn’t be accepting this amazing scholarship without an instructor like him.” Solano has a 4.57 GPA and plans to major in aerospace engineering. She is also involved in choir and UIL Academics, where she has competed in prose. She also works around 36-37 hours per week at a part-time job. “Evelyn has been a campus leader for the past four years at LHS,” LHS Principal Dr. Paul Drake shared. “Each year, she has grown in her role in the ROTC program. It is amazing to see the maturity and leadership she has at such a young age. At LHS, we look forward to watching her continue to grow as she moves forward to Texas A&M.”
